City Commission Seeks to Fill Two Vacant Commission Seats

Materials for consideration due January 18, 5pm.

Watervliet, MI – At their first regular meeting of the new year, Watervliet City Mayor Deah Muth and the City Commission agreed to a recommended appointment process by City Manager Tyler Dotson to fill two vacant seats as a result of the November 3, 2020 general election.

The two seats of the seven-member City Commission became available when then Commissioner Muth won the Mayoral contest and had to vacate her City Commission seat and when only two individuals chose to seek election for two of the three open seats in the November election. Per the City Charter, the terms of the newly appointed members will expire at the next regular municipal election slated for November 2022 where they would have the option to formally seek election to continue on the City Commission.

The process will require a letter of interest, a resume, and the completion of an approved city commission appointment application. At a special meeting on January 19 the City Commission will review all completed materials and will have the option to choose candidates to interview before the City Commission at a special meeting on January 29. Upon completion of the interviews, the City Commission may choose to appoint one or two qualifying residents at that time or may choose to do so at their February 2 regular meeting.

“As promised during my campaign, it’s my goal to hit the ground running to ensure we’re serving our community in the best ways possible. Having a full City Commission representing our constituents is a huge first step,” said Muth. Mayor Muth had previously served on the City Commission and has been an active member of the Community for several years.

The City Commission is responsible for legislation, finance and taxation, and setting the goals and vision of the community. As a seven-member body, they oversee the City Manager and all city operations. They meet regularly on the first Monday of every month at 6:30pm and as needed to conduct city business in accordance with the Open Meetings Act of 1976.
